As I try to talk to her about what MosaicPerth really is, she responds by saying, "How do you have the fine-motor skills to do pottery?" So I go on the internet to show her our blog, and unfortunately a pottery site came up. She once again looks baffled.

MosaicPerth is simply a community of followers of Jesus who attempt to live by faith, be known by love and be a voice of hope to those around them. We are a church, constantly changing what we do, based on who is in our community. If there are artists in our community we seek to connect with people through art, if there are kids in our community we seek to serve them.

We look for opportunities to connect and engage with people in the community and reveal God's kingdom (love, compassion, justice, mercy, kindness, truthfulness etc.) through our actions. We believe that no matter how dark a place may seem, there is always hope.

Practically we have people in our community being a voice of hope, in love, and with faith all across Perth. Some people go to university, others work with children, and others are self-employed. We believe God has called us to unleash those in our community to awaken humanity, so that people live their lives to the full, understanding that God's idea of what this world can be is so starkly different to what we hear on the news.

Since Mosaic is a community of people, how we engage the world around us changes as our community grows and brings new people. We believe that God wants to use all to change this world...

So in the upcoming weeks at Mosaic we are going to explore in more detail what are the core values of Mosaic, what is the type of clay that makes up our community (Dammit, I should get away from the pottery analogy, no wonder I confused my Grandma).

So please come along on Sunday as we continue to dream of what this world could be...

"Draconian" yeah that's a word for it

Next Sunday (June 20 - World Refugee Day) Refugee Rights Action Network (RRAN) with Amnesty International Australia are holding a rally in response to the government's new immigration policy, which "freezes" visa applications from people arriving from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.

Check out this video below from GetUp:

The ARTillery crew will be down there, getting creative to raise awareness about the issues. But when this pain comes to mind I am strangely filled with hope, because of the loving actions of those around me.

For example one and half years ago my mother sadly passed away. However, what overwhelmed me was the response of the Mosaic community. Instead of trying comfort me with a catchy saying like, "It will pass" they took time off work to attend her funeral. Instead of simply saying, "Let me know if you need me, I am here for you" they stayed with me and grieved with me. In fact, my family were amazed that so many of my friends attended my mum's funeral.

Staying with people in their pain is awkward and hard because we cannot fix their pain, only God can. If he chooses to.

As Easter has just passed it reminds me of how God endured so much for us, how Jesus became a man, and stayed with humanity in its pain and brokenness. I hope that because of this we too as a community (of love, faith and hope) can stay when painful circumstances hit those around us. That we can be known for our love in a crisis, that we shower others in patience and grace when they hit rock bottom. That we do not expect those around us to finish grieving for lost ones in two weeks, and that we love people regardless of whether they change or not.

How can we simply stay with others in their pain this week?

Sojourners April Fool's

Recently in America, Glenn Beck, a Morman TV and radio host, has claimed that preaching social justice as a part of the gospel is a perversion. This is the prayer:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love
where there is injury, pardon
where there is doubt, faith
where there is despair, hope
where there is darkness, light
where there is sadness, joy

O divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood, as to understand
to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen

It is a prayer that I think is a fitting meditation for the time of Easter. The death, burial and ressurection of Jesus is the cornerstone of our faith and its reality in our lives has enormous repercussions. St Francis describes a life that reflects the image of Jesus we find in the Scriptures and is an encouragement to continue to follow Him as He asked us to do.

One practical thing you can do at Easter time to be an instrument of peace is to think about the chocolate you are buying for your friends and family. This may seem a little left of centre as Easter is often portrayed for Christians as a time to think of Jesus' sacrifice and it's importance in our lives. This is true but these reflections are almost useless if they aren't transformed into the outpouring of love and hope that Jesus showed in His resurrection.

A simple choice regarding what chocolate you buy really does have a massive impact. Watch the video below to hear about the benefits of fair trading in Ghana.

You can buy Fair Trade Certified Chocolate in most supermarkets now and Oxfam have a great selection of festive chocolate delights. Your decision has a person at the end of it, so it's kind of a big deal. Plus, fair trade chocolate tastes way better, with none of that nasty guilt!

ALSO!
A cool art video:

Indo trip with Adam, Sean & Jeff

Indonesian Adventures!
By Adam Martin

On January 8th 2010 Jeff, Sean and I left Perth to a school in East Java for a strange experience. When we arrived in Indonesia we were welcomed by the thick warm air, congested traffic, and people selling whatever they could. I thought that often Westerners are frustrated by how aggressively those from Bali sell, but if I was faced with poverty how aggressively would I sell?

After flying into Subaraya we were welcomed by true Indonesian hospitality by the Richardson's and Charis National Academy; its amazing how community and belonging feels the same where ever you are in the world. The following days included teaching students and simply learning about the culture and the area. The poverty in Indonesia was not as visible as we anticipated, but the teachers were only on $150 a month, which is what a WA teacher earns in half a day.

Charis National Academy provided a school for students in the area, but was also involved in training and equipping teachers across Indonesia. I think overall the most challenging part of the the trip for me was the way the people I met lived their lives. I will introduce of few of these heroes:

Paul and Faith After retiring in the US both Paul and Faith had this feeling that they could do more than sip tea in a condo all day. At 70 both of the took a risk and went to Indonesia to serve, and have been known to hoon around on motorbikes from time to time.

Samuel Is training to go and help start schools in the jungle; this is a very difficult and lonely task... I admire his courage in going.
Wenny. Even after discovering that she is dying Wenny continues to provide after-school care for at-risk kids.

I hope this blog gives you an overview of our experience; we look forward to going back and serving in the future.

Much love

Adam

Let's get together...

and feel alright.

Here's some words that pop up in this how-to guide on being a human:

PEACE. Things happened, people did stuff and a bunch of events took place. I am sure we will all look back on this year together with much fondness. But we are in a new era: the past has passed and now only the future awaits us.

In this new era some things will be required of the new era inhabitants:
#1. When referring to the year, one must say TWENTY-ten, TWENTY-eleven, TWENTY-twelve, etc. The time of two-thousand-and-whatever is over.
#2. We are rapidly approaching October 26 2015, the date Marty McFly goes back to the future. It is imperative that we all work towards inventing the self-drying jacket.
#3. Because we’re living in a technologically insane age, check out this TED video to prepare yourself for the ART and TECHNOLOGY merger http://www.ted.com/talks/golan_levin_ted2009.html
#4. One and all must attend Jeff Smith’s acoustic gig at the Rubix Bar/Cafe on Sunday 7th Feb @ 2 – 4 PM
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/event.php?eid=444828080156
and bring friends too.

So these are just a few of the things one must do as a inhabitant of this futuristic age. Prepare your wit and your family for the onslaught of the hover board, robot slaves and an underwater world.

NB. Their dreams and their home had been shattered. They hung up their harps, and wept instead. They were asking “How can we sing our Lord's song in a foreign land?”

There was a man named Nehemiah who was the cup bearer for the king. He was one of the king's most trusted servants as he had to drink the wine before the king to make sure it was not poisoned. One day he went before the king and for the first time he was sad. The king asked him what had made his heart so sad. Nehemiah replied that how could he be happy when the city of his forefathers lay in ruins and the gates had been burned. The king asked what he wanted and Nehemiah prayed and replied that he wished to be sent to the city of Judah to rebuild it. The king agreed and at Nehemiah's request also sent letters with him to ensure safe passage and materials to rebuild the city. He took a few men with him and at night went out to inspect the walls. He told no one of the dream God had given him of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. He then told those who he was with, "You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace." (Nehemiah 2:1-18).

While Nehemiah is sitting in the palace, his home city's walls are destroyed, the town is in shambles and his people are covered in shame.

Nehemiah's dream...

Was about doing something Great, not fame

Was not about making his life easier or more comfortable

Was about serving the kingdom of Heaven

Nehemiah's dream was a seemingly impossible task. We want to be a community that values generosity, not just in the way we interact with each other, but generous in the way we see the world. Living here in Perth we already have over and above all we need. Sometimes at Christmas it's easy to get caught up in the spending spree of things we don't need, giving people gifts that they don't need.
What do you buy the person who has everything they need and want? How about saving a life.

This Christmas consider giving those you love gifts that make a life changing impact to those who have nothing. You can buy school supplies for a child in India, safe water for a household in Cambodia, or even a goat for a family in Nepal. There are over 1 billion people living in slums and countless others living in poverty who won't even know about Christmas. We have set up a virtual store with TEAR Australia. Check it out at the link below and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Help save someone's life this Christmas by using the resources and massive blessings that God has already given you.

here is the link!!

Life in Beirut

I've had an interesting introduction to Lebanese culture. As I'm sitting writing this, middle eastern music is wafting in my open door from somewhere down on the streets below. The Lebanese are very proud people. They love their country a lot and whenever they talk to me they are always telling me how beautiful their country is and asking if I like it better than Australia.

Yesterday I had a cultural experience. I went to the hair salon to have my hair washed and blow dried. Apparently women here do this regularly and it is pretty cheap to do it. I'm glad I don't have a sensitive scalp as I just about had my hair all ripped out and my scalp burned to a crisp. And I also got asked why I was not married with babies. To be Lebanese is to always look neat and clean and like you have a lot of money...even if you don't. People talk like they have a lot of money to throw around even if they are barely getting by. And they will always give you advice and their opinions on things whether you asked for it or not.

Mimi and I at the hair salon

The other thing I find remarkable is that the Lebanese (especially those in Beirut) love to push boundaries. For example you will see a Muslim woman walking along with her head covered in a scarf but wearing the tightest of jeans and a tight fitting shirt. Apparently brides here try and find the most revealing 'sexy' dress they can. I was with my host Mimi and we went to buy a new sink for their kitchen and the lady at one shop would have been in her 50s and was wearing hotpants with a 'shirt' that pretty much showed us her entire bra. Interesting contrasts.

In Beirut there is no grass, or playgrounds for children. Well actually we did go to a playground but you had to pay to enter...and it wasn't all that different to the children's playground at Heathcote or Kings Park. And the little bit of grass they had was roped off so you couldn't walk or sit on it. Just there for looks. I find if difficult imagining bringing up children in a place where you have to pay to take them to the park or the beach. Yes you even have to pay to get onto the beach ($10 per adult and $5 per child). It is definitely a different place to be. I'm still in shock after paying $10 to spend a day at the Mediterranean Sea.

Yuppi Park

The boys playing in the Mediterranean Sea

But there is so much hope in the air. People are still here, living, amongst piles of rubble and amongst buildings with telltale signs of war. Today I met a lady who came to church with us for the first time. She is a Muslim and her father died when she was very young. Her mother was killed in the war and so her grandparents brought up her and her sister from the time she was 3. She was married off to a man at the age of 13 (her sister was married off at 11½). She has 5 children with the eldest being 18. She says that she grew up with her children. She is now living at a women's refuge as she had to run away from her husband who is abusive to her. In her culture this means that her husband keeps the children. So where is the hope? Today she came with us to church and afterwards we brought her to Nabil's mother's house for lunch. Before we sat down to eat he was able to share with her all about who Jesus truly is and what he means to Nabil and what he can mean to her. She said that when she was sitting in church she felt something different...joy and peace. And right there in the lounge room today she prayed with Nabil and asked God to accept her and became one of his followers. So even amidst the ruins of her life, she is finding faith, love and hope.

Mimi with our new friend!

P.S. I found out what the big boom was that I thought was a bomb in my last post. It ended up being a canon being fired to wake the Muslims so they could eat before sunrise...being Ramadan and all. So I am still very safe!

Beirut at sunset

Shalom from Beirut

Me in Beirut - view from my bedroom

It's still crazy to think I am really here. My host Nabil was driving me back from the airport and telling me about “this is the Shiite territory and this is the Christian territory” (separated by a street), or “this is the road where the front line was back in May. We could see the planes bombing and where the bombs hit and the noise was unbelievable.” So surreal! On the other side of the fence of the house where I am staying is a bomb shelter left from the civil war. I will go exploring in there today.

So what is Beirut like? It's VERY dusty. No wonder they were always washing their feet in the Bible. The air actually smells dusty, if that makes sense. It's very warm (but you get amazing breezes off the ocean). There are a LOT of apartment buildings or just generally tall houses, all with flat roofs. The one I'm staying in has 4 floors. They build UP here. You are constantly hearing a 'popping' in the distance which is people hunting on the mountains at the back of the house. This morning I woke up at 4am to the sounds of a lone cock crowing...and I heard a big boom at one point and convinced myself it was not a bomb and went back to sleep. At 5am I was once again awakened by the call to prayer and then at 7am the Catholic monastery had a noisy rush of bells. But at night it is very still.

Yesterday I went to church soon after I arrived and it was an interesting service. They sang with great gusto in their voices and not much other expression. Mimi later told me that she struggled with this a lot until she became more fluent in Arabic and realised how expressive the words are. I didn't understand a whole lot but had an ear piece to hear the English translation. Unfortunately I was so tired I kept nodding off. Poor preacher man...it sounded like a great sermon but I can't remember what it was about.

Today is the beginning of school as Ramadan finished yesterday. I have no idea what I will be doing. But I thought I would just check in and let you all know that I am just fine and dandy.

Beirut at 4am

Forget it...

Today I found myself overlooking the river and sipping on an Amstel beer (that had a slice of lemon in it) with a friend; a day in paradise.

For the last year myself and this friend have been a part of group of people who play basketball in a juvenile detention centre; and we were both commenting on how hard it had been to go in and play lately. Then it dawned upon me: the role of a leader is to continually bring purpose back onto the radar for those in a community. I write this because I remember we started playing basketball in the prison with dream of being a voice of hope, and to simply love those that society chose to forget; but somewhere along the way I forgot why we were actually doing this- and it had become a chore.

I hope Mosaic can be a place that reminds people like me that we take action for a purpose, and for a reason... though we are weary let us continue to awaken humanity, be a voice of hope, live by faith, and be known for our love.

I took this picture with my phone today, and it reminds me of hope somehow...

It's Always Better When We're Together

On Monday night I was watching Enough Rope when Andrew Denton interviewed a guy called Matt Harding. Matt is a video game developer in America who decided to travel around the world with a mate. When they were in Vietnam his friend was filming him and told him to dance. It became something he did all around the world in front of land marks, and he edited and posted it on his website for friends and family to enjoy...except that the whole world started enjoying it to the point where his server was getting 20,000 hits a day. When he returned home a chewing gum company asked him to go around the world again, but he couldn't because he was broke. They came up with the cash to sponsor him, and off he went again, dancing around the world.

When he started dancing in Rwanda, something changed. As he started to dance all these kids jumped in the shot and started dancing with him. His whole view of what he was doing changed. Instead of bringing joy to himself and to a few people back home he found that doing silly dances brought people together in a universal language, and the journey became so much more because it was shared...it was just better.

Kinda made me think that life is not meant to be lived or experienced alone. That's what we try to do at Mosaic. We want to live life together as a community of broken people, in the hands of a Master Artist. Sometimes it's really hard (especially when you're as introverted as me), but when you experience it you realise that, in the words of Jack Johnson, "it's always better when we're together."

Watch Matt's video below. It will put a smile on your face!
Rosie

Rosie in the Philappines

So Rosie as part of our Surprise me God experiment, decides to cheat and head to a third world country to see if she gets surprised by God, ok well, she was booked for the trip beforehand and I guess she doesn't really cheat at anything... and I have a bad case of jealousy about her being there and not me! She gave me the following to put up here!

I'm in the Philippines with eleven, 16 year old high school students. Today we went into the surrounding community and as we were leaving I prayed 'Surprise me God". I was so surprised because going into such poor neighbourhoods, I expected to feel sorry for the people and have my heart broken by their poverty. Instead I felt nothing of the sort. This surprised me. They were all so happy and friendly and I didn't really notice their lack of anything. But I did feel like we stood out because we have so much and are so often not happy at all.

I was also surprised at how amazing HOT and humid it is over here. I drank 6 litres of water today and still have a headache from dehydration. But our kids are doing amazing things here, stepping out of their comfort zone and really willing to do anything. I am so proud of them.

Time for bed after a very busy and back breaking day (we spent the afternoon digging out site works for our building in pure clay).

If you have any encouragement for Rosie or the high schoolers then make sure you leave a comment for them, I will make sure they get it! Thanks for the update Rosie!

Surprise!!!

It was a subtly surprising week for many people in our community! Every day at the moment we are simply beginning the day by saying to God 'Surprise Me', and then writing about it at the end of the day- and surprises did come.

These are just a few snippets of the variety of surprises that people encountered this week:

Jeff discovered a miracle that had occurred in his childhood. His brother had jumped through a window, and did some serious damage to his arms, and even severed a nerve. In Jeff's university lecture he discovered that it was physically impossible for someone to regain full functioning in their hand after such an incident... and his brother is actively playing the piano with complete function in his hand. Jeff's university lecturer said it was a human impossibility. Who would have thought God was to surprise Jeff with stuff that already happened?

James was sitting at the school he works at with a group of yr 2 students, and thought he would play a game called, 'Where is everyone from?'. As each student explained where they were from James was amazed as out 8 kids these were some of the children's countries of origin: Burma, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Slovakia, remote indigenous, local indigenous and Kenya. What an amazing point in history we live in with such global diversity all focused in one place!

Jo was looked up on facebook by a friend from primary school.

Adam experienced a few little surprises: 1) How prayer somehow directs his attention away from himself. 2) The joy I find it spending time quietly with my close friends 3) How much having a car enables you to do more during the day.

Lee experienced the kind of surprises that we do not look for. In the space of the last two weeks she found out two of her three house mates are moving out... her surprise though was how she coped in the situation, that it did not shake her as it once would have. She was surprised as to how much God has transformed her and changed her over time. Her resilience surprised her!

Anyway these are just a few of the surprises happening in our community. I realise that many of them are not deep profound moments, but I think yesterday there was a sense that maybe God is already just doing so much around us, but we are not seeing it because are not taking time to look – surprise?

Please if you have any surprises you would like to share, email us to add to the collection

Much love

Surprise me God!

30 DAY SURPRISE ME EXPERIMENT

A man name Terry Esau wrote a book called 'Surprise Me'. It was a 30 day experiment where he started each day with three simple words, 'Surprise Me God'. In praying these words daily Terry thought 'what will happen? Will the heavens shake? Will nothing happen?'. Not only did he pray these three words to God daily, but Terry also wrote down his observations during the day, and he paid particular attention to how God surprised him during the day, and opened himself up to having his daily routine interrupted by surprises. In the routine of his everyday activities he wrote a journal, and strangely enough it became clear that surprises were happening all around him everyday.

After some of read Terry's book we have decided to embark on the same 30 day experiment together as a community. Where for 30 days we wake up everyday and pray 3 simple words to God, 'Surprise Me God'. During the day we will be looking for surprises, and then everyday write down what we observe and what runs through our heads. Each Sunday at our bible study we will have the chance to share our surprises with others and just see what happens.

Here is a brief snippet from an entry a wrote this week:

"I woke up not wanting to get up, and prayed to God 'Surprise Me'. As I prayed that words I thought 'what am I even looking for? What is a good surprise? What is a bad surprise? As my mind was asking these questions I noticed the heavy patter of rain outside, and I was surprised. Seriously it has not rained in so long here. Then I went to play golf with a friend, but it was still raining... but as I drove in my car I realised I have a great life. It does not get much better than playing golf and drinking coffee on a Monday morning with a friend. Maybe God is going to surprise me with the little stuff? Maybe the conservation I had with my friend this morning was life giving, maybe it encouraged him? Maybe it refreshed him? My first surprise was how much joy I find in the little things, maybe there are little gifts God has for me waiting to be opened each day?"

By no means is this a formula... but hopefully it gives you the general idea.

So anyone out there who it interested, just say to God, 'Surprise Me', the observe and engage with what happens. Grab a pen, or a keyboard, and start writing!

I look forward to hearing how God Surprises You!

                                                         Adam

Love me

Recently we at Mosaic had the privilege of helping to rebuild a house which had burned down. In the process of cleaning the house I noticed some artwork. Below are the photos. The artwork is a window into my soul, probably yours too, and perhaps all of humanity, capturing two opposing cries of our hearts and lives.

It seems like our world operates on the following principles...

Become, Believe, Belong...

If you act like us, and Become like us, then if you Believe what we do, we will let you Belong to us.

Jesus does it differently...

In Luke 14 we see Jesus interacting with a guy who had been rejected by the world. This guy was a tax collector who was admittedly a crooked tax collector who stole from the people. He felt so rejected by crowds that he didn't go anywhere near the rest of the people, but climbed trees to see Jesus.

While he was up a tree, Jesus walked straight up to him, and said "Hey man, we are going to your house to hang out. Come on down." After spending time with Jesus, Zac (the tax collector) then started behaving like Jesus, and believing Jesus. The order that Jesus operates in is...

You and I Belong. Full stop, you belong no matter what. Eventually after a while you start to Become like the people you hang around, and eventually you might start to Believe...

I feel like I live my life with a dual message, and I am guessing most people do too. Because we have never been able to Believe, or Become, we have never ever truly Belonged and felt loved. These photos were taken from the mess of the house which was burnt down. It was in the bedroom of a 12 year old boy.

The first photo was written on the wall, on top, the first thing you notice. It was quickly written in texta. The good news is that it wasn't permanent, it took time but was easy to remove. It was on the surface.

Those words paint a picture of someone who has been so battered in life that they are planning to reject you before you reject them. It is the story of how we live our lives in response to not belonging. It is a response to a craving that we is going on in the heart of us all.

A simple statement of a 12 year old boy who has lived a life of pain and rejection.

The second photo represents a greater longing of the heart, which often isn't noticed because of the message on the first photo. Too quickly I turn away from people scared off by the abrupt nature of "Fuck you". But this second longing the one which is written deeper, in fact it is engraved into the wall of our lives and engraved into our hearts. The picture describes it perfectly...

The hard part is to see past the first cry of the heart, the "fuck you" cry that people scream in order to protect themselves from the rejection experienced in the past. Deep down though we all have the same desire. "Love me". It is written on our souls, engraved into our hearts.

Love me...
James

Belong, Become, Believe...

Graduation time!

Rosie, sent me this post to let people know of something else cool that happened in our community...

I work at a high school called Somerville Baptist College. It's an amazing school to get involved with as the staff love the kids so much. Our community at Mosaic decided to give each of the graduating students a copy of the book Soul Cravings by Erwin McManus. Last night I watched 94 Year 12's walk across a stage ending one part of their life, and entering the world to find out exactly who they are as an adult, without the safety net of school.

As always it's sad to see them leave, but you also realise how much people grow and change in 5 years, and how often we outgrow our surroundings and need to move on. They will all at one point in their lives realise their need and craving for intimacy, destiny and meaning.

I hope they find it in a community like Mosaic... I hope they search for it and end up satisfying their craving with the only thing that truly can... a relationship with God. I hope for them...

If anyone else out there would like a copy of the book "Soul Cravings" or the DVD short film series then make sure you email us or just reply to this post!

Footy!!

On Saturday 11 players, and 2 runners walked in Banksia Hill Detention Centre to play a football game. Some of the people had been before, some had no idea what to expect, and I'm sure all those 'prison' stories did not help in the creation of their expections.

So wearing tight guernseys that were made for 5 year olds, myself and the football team walked through the big security doors, and walked down to the oval, wondering what the day had prepared for us. In the distance thirty boys and a few guards walking down towards us on the ovals, the sun by this stage was telling us that summer had arrived. We organised the Banksia boys into team, and let the beating begin.

I played a few positions and when I playing full forward I started to chat to one of the boys who was living at Banksia, and much to my surprise he asked me questions as to who our team was, and why we came in. I began to share with this young man how we were a bunch of mates from all walks of life, and all different professions, and had simply come in the hope of provide hope in their lives... providing recreation, and being a group of people who played in a way which was a positive example to their lives... he looked at me with a big smile, and said 'Well, thanks cous for taking the time to organise this cous, we really appreciate it'.

One of my friends who is a teacher by trade commented to me afterwards how she was surprised at how well-mannered, polite and thankful all of the Banksia players were towards us, and she said that many of her own students were not as thankful as them.

As the sun got hotter and the game ended, so did our dreams... the Banksia boys annihilated our team, running rings around us, and reminding us of our age.

I have been into the detention centre many times now, but again I walked out amazed. Amazed that something so seemingly meaningless could be so significant and profound, and how providing hope in peoples lives may not be as complex as we think. All the players are keen to come back again, and the Banksia boys told me they look forward to 'cutting us up' again (maybe the wrong term from a resident), so any other footy players out there seeking to be amazed and simply provide hope in the lives of those who often do not see hope... please join me in the sun!

Adam all alone with no one to talk to... means a long post!

Last great post from Adam on his epic journey to be a person of faith, remembered for his love, and a voice of hope in the Philippines

I am sitting in Manila airport after making sure the taxi driver did not rip me off. Unfortunately people try to rip you off all the time; you need to be careful; so I made the taxi driver actually use the meter. After I paid the man his dues and he drove off, in Filipino tradition I had to wait... so as I am waiting I'm just attempting to bring together what actually happened in my time here:

On the road trip up to the airport we had 8 kids and 7 adults in one car... sure it was a jeep, but it was cozy. The beautiful green mountains surrounded us, and as we drove across a bridge, I saw this amazing waterfall that crashed down the mountainside. The kids we so excited because they were going up the city to hang out at a mall and see a movie. Two of the boys had never even been to the movies.

Along the way we were having trouble with one of our tyre's leaking a little, so we stopped to get it pumped up in a little town, where there were a lot of military. The military were parading around with some serious weapons; they look a lot more serious than in Counter Strike. (Plant the bomb at long A!!)

I remember walking on the streets in Malaybalay outside the back, and the security guard was holding a massive shotgun... there was another guard outside a super-market holding a shotgun, and it seems like it was not pointing at the ground.

But as I do reflect on my time I realise the greatest gift for me was meeting the children, their joy and life has so won my heart. For example yesterday I bought a lot of lilies and ran a treasure hunt for the kids in the home and the kids in the community... they were all so grateful, looked out for each other, and have such respect for their elders. In fact in Visayan (the main language spoken in Mindano), there are two words you need to use after many of your sentences when addressing those older than you... 'Po', and 'Kuya'... I was known as Kuya Adam.

In the afternoon it bucketed down with rain, like a monsoon or something, and outside kids were sliding and running in the rain, having a blast, one kid even decided to get naked and just run around. Every day here I have run games for kids, taught music and taught the children how to write songs, it truly has been a joy. Last night as I was leaving all the kids drew pictures for me and gave me gifts, and the staff encouraged me in celebrating what they saw in me that were strengths.

The pace of life was difficult for me to begin with, getting up at 4:30am to run; 5:30am was a sleep in. The kids and adults are in bed by 8, and I would just stay up with Felicity to chat and play games. In being here I realise again that I can get quite driven, and end up defining my identity by how much I can fit into a day, and not who I am becoming.

I climbed mountains, walked down waterfalls, ran up and down staircases with local kids, played basketball and to the kids dismay, I still cannot dunk it! I ate a frog, I ate random fruit, I dug holes in the ground, I got my haircut, I had to slouch so my head would not hit the roof, and the Filipino "hairdresser" had to stand on a stool. I attempted to learn Visayan, but only mastered a few words... and I played with kids a lot, and even changed some nasty nappies (nasty is too light of a word).

But though I have been encouraged by the joy and life of the children, and many of the adults, like everywhere there is the other side of the coin.

The day before I left, a man who lived close to the home came by and invited me to his house; he was very drunk. We walked across the paddock, holding hands - the Australian in me was very uncomfortable with this. We went to his house and there were about 5 guys just getting blind drunk. Most Filipino men had a predetermined course of action they thought I was going to take. First they just wanted me to get drunk, then of course because I was leaving I needed to give them something (I did not though), then they went on to offer me Filipino women, some were young girls, not really women yet. I eventually left, but was amazed in one day to see the extremes of what people are capable of. The kids brought such life and love, and these men were just dirty. Dirty doesn't seem strong enough to describe men who offer their own daughters in prostitution for their own gain.

So I am ready to return to Australia, and in no way am leaving the Philippines thinking that this is utopia, in fact it is up there in the top-ten most corrupted nations... but I saw glimpse of humanity... what a great trip its been!

A pic from the Philippines...

OK, so I asked Adam for a photo from the Philippines, and seeing as he is so tech savvy he was able to send one through, I am not sure what the photo is about, or why he specifically sent it, but I thought I would let you guys share my curiosity. I am sure that when Adam gets back this Thursday he will regale us with a tale or two explaining what is going on in the picture!

Here is the update he sent me too.

Cabin fever! The lifestyle hear down in Maylaybalay is so slow, I am being faced with my addiction to busyness. In the mornings I have digging holes or just playing with the kids here. I am enjoying my time here, but when I no longer have a set structure each day, or a car to be able to get away, or people to go and see, it makes me begin to become comfortable with not doing anything. Maybe this experience will help me to develop and be comfortable with, an identity outside of being busy.

Adam's Epic Journey part IV, A New Hope...

Yup, a new post from Adam! Prizes for guessing where the title of the post comes from...

The weather in the Philippines is humid and hot as usual even early in the morning. Today I got to do something that I do not really enjoy.

The children's home at the moment is at a temporary site, which has been offered for 18 months. Some very generous people called Glen and Grace have donated a some land and resources so that Kids International could build a permanent facility. The current temporary setup could cope with 20 children max, but the proposed plans for the new site could cope with nearly a 100.

So I went out to the site and in following the footsteps of my hero, Dale Kerrigan, I started digging some holes. Brandon (the Aussie guy who is overseeing the building of the new home), had employed some locals to help. Some of the locals were cutting down wood for the foundations, and some were digging holes.

In the Philippines an average wage for a labourer is about 250 pesos a day, which is the equivalent to about $8AU a day. The tree cutters who were more specialised were on around 350 pesos a day. One of the guys on 250 pesos a day had three kids, and had to put them on school on that wage. Though items are cheaper in the Philippines it still is not a lot of money.

When I was waiting in Manila airport to fly down to Mindano, I read a local newspaper. In the local newspaper they had published the results of a survey on happiness. The top two categories that polled amongst the people were 1) Family 2) Religion. Work, sex and even education were listed significantly lower than these two.

Being here for these past for days, digging holes, playing with kids etc I am reminded at my Westerness. Here the culture is not individualistic, but communal. Even being in the home, yesterday I went running with the boys at 4:30am, then dug holes for 8 hrs, then came home and all the kids wanted to play. So the need for me to have my own space is being challenged. The contrast of life in Perth and life in Mindano has shown me how I have an abundance of personal space, and sometimes maybe even too much. What would my life look like if I learnt from the Filipino people and lived more communally, thinking of others first, and not being so individualistic.

BBQs are back!

Well we just got back from our first BBQ of the summer! The kids here in the home within a day stole my heart, they are all so eager to play, and no one loves to play like I do! Even the kids in the surrounding houses/huts are so eager to play, and I have a new tradition, 4:30am running with 10 or more local boys joining me. This silence was soon broken when a man asked if he could sit in the seat next to me. As he sat across from me, I began doing what I love, hearing people's stories.... His name was Peter, and he had been a steward for Air Canada for 30 years, had an IT business on the side and he was in Sydney for 24 hrs on a layover.

We talked about life, relationships, and he stressed to me some wisdom that he wished he had grabbed hold of in his youth and wished that he worked harder to put money away for the future. He said that he was away for about 5 months of the year, and got about 7 months off, but that his family were always complaining that he was not around, but the pay was good. Sometimes he would get back from a trip and he had missed key moments in his children's lives. He also began to explain how the company he worked for had constantly screwed him over, and that he felt it had begun to effect his attitude towards costumers.

After a while we ran out of things to say, so we both left like we had something else to do (which we did not), and I thought even a steward on a plane who might provide bad service, has a story.

After the conversation with Peter ended I jumped on bus to meet a friend at Bondi Beach. When I got on the bus, I asked the girl in the seat in front of me which stop to get off at Bondi, and at this very moment she also asked me this same question, which resulted in some awkward laughter. I asked where she was from and why she was in Sydney, because I could tell she was not a local (she was asking what colour the sand was going to be!). She said she was from Pakistan and was in Sydney for the Oxfam International Youth Conference. She began to share her heart for community development, and how she had been sponsored to come out to this conference, her face was beaming as she told me her journey of how she came to be in Sydney.

She said that there were representatives from 90 countries around the world, and it had been such an amazing experience meeting all these people who journeys in life had been so different to each other- then we were suddenly stopped at the bus stop and parted ways. As I walked down Bondi strip, wondering how people could be wearing such a small amount of clothing in such a cold wind, I asked myself how is it that I seem to meet such random people?

I saw all the people down at the beach, and all the people in the restaurants, and the people driving by in their cars. I wondered where they were going, I wondered if they were meeting a friend, or if they had suffered through a bad day at work, I wondered what their story was, and what their journey was which brought them to be a the Bondi strip in this moment. This is a guy who obviously cares a lot about music, the investment he has made into listening to music begs me to listen to his opinion. Some people think I care about music, and I do, a quick glance around my living room and you will see 2 guitars, a media PC, 3 mp3 players, a record player, and sound system. Yet this guy, this "audiophile" blows me away!

His blog posting was addressing the issue of music sales falling he writes

"I'll close with a theory of mine--crappy sounding music is killing the music business. MP3s are subversive because they have apparently stopped people from really listening. Music has become a background soundtrack to other activities. It's just not important anymore. So if the music isn't moving you, maybe, just maybe, it's the sound that's turning you off."

You see songs that are saved as mp3 files have gone through a process called "compression". Compression means that up to about 90% of the original recorded sound has been removed. They deem the information not necessary and "throw away" the information in order to make the music file smaller. The logic behind this technique is, the missing information isn't audible, so lets get rid of it. Someone figures if you don't know what you are missing then you will never know the difference. These files are called "lossy file formats". These files differ from the really large files called "lossless" ie. nothing is lost in the codec.

The "audiophile" surmises that people are not buying music because people no longer really listen to music because it actually sounds crap if you really listen to it, and it sounds crap not because of what is in the music, but because of what is not in the music. I think I agree with him too. When you stop to listen to a CD on a really good sound system it is amazing what you hear, even if you have heard the song 1000 times before. A good sound system will make you stop, and "wow"...

Even if technically what is not there we couldn't hear it anyways, I think it makes a difference. I think we do notice. Somewhere in our heads we tune out a little because of it. The colour and noise left in the music doesn't have any space on which to position itself. What is more, I think our lives begin to look the same, we operate in the same lossy format. It seems that if you are not being "productive" with your time that "someone" (not sure who this someone is, perhaps Santa, or some other figure from our childhood, must ask Freud about that one!) is frowning upon us.

It seems that everything in our lives is geared towards less downtime, higher productivity, staying in contact, being productive on the go, and maintaining your email account 24h a day. A new gadget comes out every week promising to make you more productive. It seems we are slowly compressing our lives into a lossy format. A lossy format where we minimize the amount of time where we are not making noise, we cut it out of our lives.

I know in my life I often feel like there are not enough "wow"s. Perhaps i need to start living my life in a lossless codec?

BBQs coming!

Ok this summer we are going to be doing our river Bbq's again... It seems that people are struggling to find us on Sundays! So we have started this blog to help fill people in on what is happening in Mosaic Perth (until we get our website up and running).

Every Sunday a group of us meet on Sunday afternoon at 149b Coode st, Como for a bible study. This is a chance to explore what it means to follow Jesus. We start at 5pm so feel free to come along!

Make sure you email us if you have any questions. mosaicperth@gmail.com
